CHAPTER FIVE

It was the day Faith was to meet Professor Warren to be introduced to the mini lab. She was enthusiastic about. She had been counting hours since the days she went to his lab. She dream did not stop hunting her reality. In fact, she felt it now more than ever. There was now an unusual connection with the empire. A strong feeling about the empire had suddenly risen inside of her. Could it be her desperation? Or was it natural? She wasn’t sure which one it was, but it was getting stronger by the day.

Audrey now had access to her house more often than before. Not for once did he allow the fire he ignited between the two of them to diminish. He was always visiting. And unlike Faith anticipated, she was starting to enjoy his company. They played and talked through the night until it was time for him to leave. But she was yet to let him in on her little secret.

“Looks like someone’s going out,” he said.

He was coming to her house, but then he met her along the street. For Audrey, it was always a pleasure to behold this piece of beauty. Those eyes of hers and the smile always left him longing to see her again whenever he left her presence.

“You’re losing it, man,” he would try to caution himself.

But that was the truth. And to punish him the more, Faith had stopped hiding her tresses beneath her black beanie. She now let it lose and gleaming in the lights. It made her appear dangerously attractive. Even at twilight, the glossiness of the strands shimmered like tiny flashes of light on a water surface.

“Yeah, I am. There is someone really important I need to see,” she replied, tucking her hair behind her ear.

“Someone as important as I am, right?” Audrey teased.

Faith chuckled.

“Yeah, maybe,” she answered.

“Okay. I was coming to check on you though. But I guess I’ll... I’ll come back later.”

Audrey’s face suddenly turned cloudy. There was a feeling he was trying to conceal. There was a question he wanted to ask, but he thought he would be overstepping his boundaries if he did. Faith might not find it funny, and that could shatter the progress he had made so far.

But Faith understood the look on his face. She smiled.

“This person I’m rushing off to see is not whom you think he is,” she assured him.

“Oh, it’s...”

“Yes, it’s a ‘he’,” Faith helped him finished the words. She knew it was what he wanted to say.

“So clean that look on your face, boy – it doesn’t suit you. I’ll be back soon, I guess. I’ll call you when I do. Bye...”

“Take care of yourself,” Audrey said as she walked away.

He watched as she crossed the street. That feeling Faith saw on his face was still lingering. He couldn’t beat it. He was glad, however, that Faith thought it wise to clear his insecurities. That meant he was making progress. For all he knew, she might even be in love with him now.
